What kind of paint will stick to rubber?

Before you paint your rubber piece you need to know what your paint options are and how they will protect the condition of your rubber piece. Below are the different types of paint you can use and what you should be using them for when considering the type of paint you need.

  • Removable Paint
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Commercial Marine Paint
  • Exterior Paint

Removable Paint

Some of the rubber objects that you plan to paint are things that may be repainted in the future. Anything rubber that you plan to paint temporarily should be used with removable paint.

The biggest benefit of removable paint is its ability to be applied and stay that way as long as you need it to. Removable paint is not prone to wearing off or even cracking before it is needed to do so.

NOTE: The paint can be removed easily with a razor blade so that you can paint your rubber a new color to fit your needs.

Acrylic Paint

Acrylic paint is meant for a number of surfaces which does include rubber. For pieces that are decorative and will be stationary in the home or property, acrylic paints give your piece a professional look.

Unfortunately, acrylic paint is not meant to be moved or spend much time being handled. Too much interaction with acrylic paint will cause it to break down and start to peel.

TIP: Acrylic paint works best on pieces that require a lot of detail and can be applied with ease through various paintbrush sizes.

Commercial Marine Paint

Meant for excessive exposure to water, commercial marine paint offers some of the strongest paint flexibility on the market. No matter how much interaction the paint has with water, salt, or even direct sunlight, the integrity of the paint can keep up with the environment.

While it is often used on boats, it is viable for rubber and will paint with ease. It does often come with a steeper cost than the other paint types, but it is well worth the investment.

TIP: If you are planning to use your painted rubber regularly by touch Marine Paint is great option. Because of the paint's quality and integrity, there is not a need for primer before applying.

Exterior Paint

If you do not have access to commercial marine paint, exterior paint is another option that you can use, especially if your rubber pieces are going to be exposed to lots of different weather elements. This type of paint not only manages excessive sun exposure but also protects against lots of water and snow that your piece may come into contact with.

Rubber pieces that are outside can suffer significant damage from the sun and excess moisture. Also, temperature changes to rubber pieces can cause the paint to crack if you use something like acrylic paint.

How to apply paint on rubber?

Applying the paint to the rubber can be done with just a few simple steps.

1. Clean The Rubber

Make sure that the piece you are planning to paint is clean and free from dirt and debris.

2. Rinse and Dry

After you have washed your rubber, you need to make sure that you thoroughly rinse it and allow it to dry.

3. Prime Away

If you are using external paint, then you need to apply a layer of primer. This is not necessary for all paints, so check your paint to see if it is required. Allow it to dry before moving forward.

4. First Layer of Paint

Once the primer has dried, it is time to apply your first layer of paint. The layer does not need to be very thick. All to dry

5. Apply the Second Paint Layer

Once the first layer has dried completely, you can apply the second layer of paint. Allow the layer to dry and determine if a third is needed. Continue until the paint meets your expectations.
